The Gut-Skin Connection (Part 1): “It Wasn’t Just My Skin - It Was My Gut”

The Gut-Skin Connection (Part 1): “It Wasn’t Just My Skin - It Was My Gut”

For years, I stared at my skin in frustration, wondering what I was doing wrong.

I changed products.
I tried stronger creams.
I prayed for healing.

But no one - not one doctor or brand - told me to look at my gut (aka digestive system)

💭 What does my stomach have to do with my skin?

That was my first question too.

The truth? Everything!

Your Gut, also known as the gastrointestinal tract is responsible for digesting and absorbing food nutrients and it runs from the mouth all the way to the anus. This makes the gut and skin deeply connected, because when your gut is inflamed, struggling, or imbalanced, nutrient absorption becomes poor and you become well depleted in essential minerals and vitamins, as a result the body develops chronic skin conditions like:

- Eczema
- Psoriasis
- Hormonal acne
- Hives or rashes
- Dry, flaky, dull skin
- Slow healing and constant flare-ups

The body isn’t separate - it’s one system. And God didn’t design it to fight itself. He designed it to heal in rhythm.

💡 Here’s what I didn’t know back then…

I was eating “normal” food...

Applying steroids and regular emollient when prescribed…

Snacking on things that said “healthy” on the label; this guys!...

Sleep deprived and overworked...

And all the while, my gut lining was weakening. My good bacteria were struggling.
And my immune system - 70% of which lives in the gut - was constantly on edge.

So my skin? It was screaming for help.

🌱 What Changed Everything

I stopped looking at flare-ups as a “skin problem” and started treating them as a holistic problem.

That’s when healing really began. Not overnight, but gradually; gently I

- Cut back processed sugar + dairy - big gut irritants
- Started adding fermented foods like sauerkraut
- Began drinking herbal teas and gut-friendly smoothies
- And most importantly, I slowed down and let God teach me how to be more self-aware.

✝ The Mindset & Faith Part No One Talks About

Healing my gut wasn’t just about what I ate. It was about what I believed too.

I had to stop saying, “I’m always going to have this.”
And start declaring, “I was made to heal.”
I had to stop hiding. Start learning. Start trusting God’s design again.

“Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service” – Romans 12:1
