You Can’t Heal Skin on Junk Food: What I Learned About Nutrition and Chronic Skin Conditions.
Share
I used to think skincare started with what I put “on” my body. Steroid creams, over-the-counter moisturisers, thick butters from every high-street shelf — I tried them all. But my skin kept flaring. Angry. Red. Itchy. Embarrassing. And deep down, I knew something wasn’t right.
It wasn’t until I got serious about what I was putting “in” my body that everything began to change.
What You Eat Shows on Your Skin
When you live with eczema, psoriasis, or chronic inflammation, your skin is constantly trying to detox - to tell you something. And the truth is, no amount of shea butter can fully outwork a system that’s overloaded with sugar, dairy, processed foods and most importantly the wrong mindset.
I had to unlearn a lot. I had to stop saying, “It’s just a little treat.”
Because for me, it wasn’t a treat — it was a trigger.
God's Design Is Still the Blueprint
God didn’t create ultra-processed snacks, sugary cereals, or energy drinks. He gave us fruit-bearing trees, seeds, nuts, herbs, and leaves - and told us in Genesis 1:29
“I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth, and all the fruit trees for your food”.
When I began to lean into that truth, everything shifted. My skin calmed. My flare-ups became less aggressive. My confidence came back - slowly but surely.
Here are 7 Healing Foods I Keep in My Kitchen
If you're ready to nourish your skin from the inside out, here are some simple, healing foods to start with:
- Avocados – rich in healthy fats that hydrate your skin cells
- Pumpkin seeds – full of zinc, which helps repair the skin barrier
- Berries – loaded with antioxidants to fight inflammation
- Leafy greens; like spinach – cleanse the blood and reduce flare-ups
- Turmeric – powerful anti-inflammatory (add it to warm teas or curries)
- Omega-3s; like chia seeds – calm inflammatory skin conditions
- Plenty of water - because dry skin often starts with dehydration
What I Had to Let Go Of
As hard as it was, I had to say goodbye to:
- Dairy (especially cow's milk)
- Refined sugar (triggers inflammation)
- White bread and processed carbs
- Soya milk which flared me up a lot.
Letting go was a form of deliverance.
A Prayer for You on This Journey
“Lord, show me what to release so that I may receive your healing. Give me wisdom in how I nourish my body. Help me make choices that lead to peace, inside and out.” The truth is you can’t disregard your source (YHWH) from your healing journey.
